Historic Night for Irish Football as Senior Women’s Team Reach World Cup

Republic of Ireland senior women’s team booked their place in the 2023 World Cup following a 0-1 win over Scotland at Hampden Park on an historic night for Irish football. It is the first time that the women’s side have reached the finals and huge celebrations began upon the final whistle.

A single goal from Amber Barrett in the 72nd minute was enough to secure the win for Vera Pauw’s side and she remembered those who tragically lost their lives in Cresslough last Friday during her goal celebration.

The World Cup will begin in July 2023 and is jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Ireland finished second in their group containing Sweden, Finland, Slovakia and Georgia to qualify for the play-off against Scotland and due to other draws and Iceland’s loss, qualified directly for the finals off the back of the win on Tuesday night.

Ireland manager Vera Pauw was absolutely thrilled when speaking to RTE after the final whistle.

“I just can’t believe it. Until the final whistle, I was thinking how is this possible? We prepared for everything, and we were ready for every scenario. The game plan was successful. It’s amazing. They have completely bought into this commitment and game plan.”
