Dromin-Athlacca failed to make it out of their group in the 2021 Premier IHC.
As we approach round one of the 2022 Premier Intermediate Hurling championship, Dromin-Athlacca will be hoping for better success this year as they open their campaign against Knockainey.
The side struggled in their group last year, winning one game out of a possible three against bottom side Bruff but it was some improvement compared to their 2020 relegation play-off win.
Ahead of the championship opener, manager Gerard Hickey hailed the competition as ‘one of the best around’ and believes there’s little between most sides that are competing this year.
“It’s a championship that’s one of the best around, there’s loads of games, loads of opportunity, it’s very hard to pick out who will win or lose but I suppose the nature of the competition is lots of games and getting a good start will always help and hopefully we’ll get that against Knockainey.”
Hickey also recognised the rise of hurling standards across the country and believes keeping a simple game plan for his players to understand will be a key to success.
“Look at the way Limerick play now and all the inter-county teams, they’re driving the standards within the county and players coming back into the clubs are driving that as well. So it’s about adding as much as you can to the pot but yet keeping your game plan simple.”
Dromin-Athlacca will also welcome All-Ireland winner David Reidy back to the fold after his successful campaign with Limerick. Hickey was full of praise for Reidy who will be an important player for Dromin-Athlacca.
“David (Reidy) is an incredible guy, incredible athlete, carries himself so well with Limerick and around the club.”
“The lads have huge respect for him, he digs in and pushes on the young lads as well and he’s one of 24/25 lads but he’s a massive leader, he’s contributed massively to Limerick down through the years so we’re delighted to have him back.”
Dromin-Athlacca take on Knockainey this Saturday in Knocklong at 7pm in the first round of the Limerick Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship.
