Kiely, Gillane and Ambrose claim Munster GAA awards

Gillane and Kiely won yet another Munster and All-Ireland double this past year, while Ambrose saw her side come up short in the LGFA Junior All-Ireland final.

John Kiely, Aaron Gillane and Roisin Ambrose have had their fantastic 2023 form recognised with awards from Munster GAA.

Gillane and Kiely won yet another Munster and All-Ireland double this past year, while Ambrose saw her side come up short in the LGFA Junior All-Ireland final.

Hurler of the Year – Aaron Gillane (Limerick)

Gillane has followed up his All-Star hurler of the year award with the Munster equivalent for 2023.

Fellow Patrickswell man Diarmaid Byrnes claimed the prize in 2022, but it is Gillane who takes the 2023 edition following a stellar year. The sharpshooter was pivotal in his side’s journey to yet another Munster title and Liam MacCarthy Cup, popping up with some crucial goals along the way.

He joins Richie McCarthy, Seán Finn, Gearoid Hegarty and Kyle Hayes as Limerick men who have received the award.

Manager of the Year – John Kiely (Limerick)

Kiely has been at the helm since his appointment in 2017, and has been outstanding ever since. Under his guidance the Shannonsiders have been to five All-Ireland finals, five Munster finals and three Allianz Hurling League finals without tasting a single defeat.

The Galbally native has been confirmed to stay on for 2024, and has made some additions to his backroom team as they look to deliver a historic fifth successive Liam MacCarthy cup to the Treaty County.

Ladies Footballer of the Year – Róisin Ambrose (Limerick)

Ambrose made her debut with the Limerick team in 2018 when she helped the Shannonsiders to win the All-Ireland Junior title.

Initially lining out at half-forward, she transitioned to midfield in recent years where she has flourished, being named captain for the last two seasons.

She was named on the Team of the League in 2022 and 2023 and this year, was nominated for Junior Players’ Player of the Year and earned a spot on the Team of the Championship 2023.

The 2023 Munster GAA awards function will take place this Saturday in the Muckross Park Hotel Killarney.
