Limerick FC lose Fitzgerald to Waterford

Will Fitzgerald has become the fourth confirmed departure from the Limerick FC squad in July as he has decided to join Munster rivals Waterford FC. Fitzgerald has only made one appearance for the Shannonsiders in the First Division this year as he has been injured.

A statement on the official club website read;

Waterford FC is delighted to announce the signing of William Fitzgerald.The much-sought-after winger joins to add another attacking threat to the Blues squad and will wear the #19 jersey.

The exciting winger was clearly delighted to sign for the club and return to Premier Division football. Speaking to Waterford FC’s official website, Fitzgerald stated:

“I’m really happy to get everything sorted. It’s a great club and it’s clear over the past few seasons that there is a lot of good working going on to push it in the right direction.

And I want to play my part in that. I met Rennie [Alan Reynolds], had a look around the facilities and I wanted to come here. It’s a professional setup and the facilities are top class; training pitches, playing pitch, the gym, everything is here for the players.”

The Limerick native will also be re-united with former teammates Shane Duggan and Bastien Hery as well as former coach Joe Gamble.

“I’ve worked with Joe Gamble, Shane Duggan and Bastien Hery at Limerick so it’ll be great to link up with them again now. It was tough to leave Limerick, and I want to thank them for everything over the past years for what I’ve learned.”

Fitzgerald has spent the first half of the 2019 season on the sidelines for his hometown club following injury but did make one appearance before his departure as a late substitute during a 0-0 draw with Wexford FC. The hardworking winger made 32 league appearances in the Premier Division last season and caught the eye of many including new Irish U-21 manager Stephen Kenny.

Before Kenny left Dundalk to take charge of the underage national side, the Lilywhites were reportedly interested in taking Fitzgerald to Oriel Park. At the beginning of 2019, Kenny did invite Limerick duo Fitzgerald and Karl O’Sullivan to join a training camp for the Irish U-21 squad which culminated in a friendly match against an Irish Junior soccer selection which Fitzgerald took part in.

It appears that the Suirsiders havd beaten off stiff competition from both Derry City and St. Patrick’s Athletic to capture the youngster’s signature
