The draws for the 2023 Higher Level Education GAA Fitzgibbon and Sigerson Cups were made in Croke Park today.
The Limerick colleges learned their fate in the Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cups as the draws for the 2023 competitions were confirmed this afternoon.
In the Fitzgibbon Cup, there are three Limerick colleges involved in defending champions UL, TUS MidWest and Mary I. As they were in 2022, UL are drawn alonsgide TUS MidWest in Group D of the competition. They are joined by ATU Galway. Last year both UL and TUS made it out of their groups with the Castletroy College going on to beat NUIG in the decider. The duo provide 11 Limerick players to this year’s edition.
Mary I are in Group B with SETU Carlow and DCU. Mary I were eliminated in the group stages in 2022, where they were paired with eventual finalists NUIG and the defending champions UCC. They have Patrickswell’s Jason Gillane in their ranks for the upcoming season.
The final for the 2023 competition is Saturday, February 19 in Carlow.

Sigerson Cup
UL are Limerick’s only representative in the Sigerson Cup. They were beaten in last year’s final by NUIG in what was only their second ever final appearance. This year they have drawn UCC in the first round. That game it to be played on January 11/12.
The Cork side were champions in 2020 and have won 23 titles ever, level with NUIG and only behind UCD who have won on 34 occasions. UCC will have home advanatage.
UL have two local players in their squad in the form of Ronan McElligott and John Hayes. In total there are five Limerick men split across the colleges.
The final for the Sigerson is to be played on February 15.
