Treaty United fall to Athlone defeat | HIGHLIGHTS

Despite tasting defeat again, Treaty still boast the second best defence in the league, with five goals conceded in seven games.

Treaty United suffered another League of Ireland First Division defeat on Monday night, as Athlone Town hosted a 1-0 win to make it back to back losses for the Shannonsiders.

Tommy Barrett’s men had started the season brightly, but losses to Athlone and Finn Harps see the Limerick side sit fourth in the table, seven points off the top.

Athlone’s victory moved them within two points off Treaty, although the Midlands outfit have played a game more than their Limerick counterparts, who had their clash with Longford Town postponed.

It was a tight game on Monday night, with Aaron Connolly’s first half strike the only goal of the game. Despite tasting defeat again, Treaty still boast the second best defence in the league, with five goals conceded in seven games.

A long ball played Connolly in behind 17 minutes into the tie, and the midfielder produced a powerful right footed effort to the opposite corner, beyond United’s teenage keeper Michael Dike.

Treaty hit back with attacks of their own, Alec Byrne’s spinning headed effort calling Athlone keeper Enda Minogue into action.

With half-time approaching, the Shannonsiders came close with a hopeful acrobatic attempt, but in truth, they offered little threat in the opening 45, and headed into the break 1-0 down.

Barrett’s men failed to create anything concrete in the second half, a series of half chances the best they could muster, meaning it was consecutive defeats for Treaty, their brilliant start to the season beginning to stutter.

They are on the road again this Friday night, as they travel to face Wexford FC, who are sixth in the table, three points behind Treaty with a game in hand.
