Fixture confirmed for Limerick’s Tailteann Cup opener with Longford

The Shannonsiders were victorious in the last meeting of the teams in the first round of the NFL Division 3 last year.

The Limerick senior footballers will begin their 2023 Tailteann Cup campaign against Longford this Saturday afternoon in the TUS Gaelic Grounds it has been confirmed.

Throw in at the Ennis Road venue will be at 6pm as Limerick enter the Tailteann Cup for the first time. Group 3’s other game sees Wicklow host Carlow the following afternoon.

The game is not scheduled to be shown on GAAGO.

Limerick are the top seeds in their group and will travel to Carlow the following weekend with a game against Wicklow in a neutral venue concluding their round robin stage.

The Shannonsiders were victorious in the last meeting of the teams in the first round of the NFL Division 3 last year. Brian Donovan bagged a brace while Cillian Fahy and James Naughton also found the target in the 4-9 to 1-11 victory in the Gaelic Grounds.

Limerick went on to win promotion but were relegated back to the third tier this March. Longford also suffered relegation earlier this year, finishing second from bottom to drop to the lowest tier.

Longford’s place in the Tailteann Cup was confirmed after their Leinster preliminary quarter-final defeat to Offaly. Limerick’s chance at the Sam Maguire was ended by Clare after they fell to a 0-16 to 1-16 defeat to the Banner in the Munster semi-final.

In the Tailteann Cup, the top team in the group qualifies directly for the quarter-finals. New York and the three best third placed teams will meet the second placed sides in the preliminary quarters.
