PREVIEW | Killeedy and Newcastle West renew acquaintances in Limerick Senior Camogie Final

The TUS Gaelic Grounds will play host to this Sunday’s Limerick Senior Camogie Final between Killeedy and Newcastle West.

The Limerick Senior Camogie Championship will once again be contested by Killeedy and Newcastle West after both sides maintained a 100% record to the final.

Last year Killeedy were five point winners in dethroning NCW.

Newcastle West had won their first ever title the previous year and will be competing in a third successive decider.

Killeedy’s triumph was their 8th ever title but they began this year’s campaign slowly, picking up low scoring wins over Granagh Ballingarry and Na Piarsaigh. The defending champions failed to score a goal but topped the table with a scoring difference of +4.

But in the semi-final, they showed their class in putting Ahane to the sword, winning out by 4-9 to 1-4 to put their final opponents on notice.

Newcastle West on the other hand, began their season with huge intent, defeating Ahane 2-20 to 1-3 in their opener. They followed this up with successive wins over Crecora and Bruff to seal their place atop group one.

In the last four they were paired with perennial contenders Granagh Ballingarry at home. In torrential conditions, Newcastle West eeked out a win to move into the final yet again.

For both sides, there are a number of players chasing a unique double. Among the Newcastle West contingent, no fewer than 14 were involved in Monagea’s Senior Football win over Ballylanders last weekend with intercounty camogie stars Yvonne Lee, Grace Lee, Deborah Murphy, Karen O’Leary and Ella Whelan all starting.

Killeedy can call on six of the successful Drom Broadford side who retained their Ladies Intermediate Football championship with a win over Oola last Sunday. Limerick camogie players Aine Cunningham, Sarah Shanahan and Ellana Mulcahy all started in the TUS Gaelic Grounds win.

Elsewhere, Killeedy can call upon the likes of Aisling Scanlon, Valerie Shanahan and captain Karen Mullane who all represented Limerick earlier this year. So too can Newcastle West turn to intercounty experience in the form of Roisin Ambrose and Rebecca Delee to name a couple.

It is a very difficult game to call with both sides clear at the top of the Limerick Camogie ladder. Who will make the final step is anyone’s guess.

Throw in this Sunday is 2.15 in the TUS Gaelic Grounds with the Intermediate final between Cappamore and Monaleen acting as a curtain raiser.
